Nairobi - Kenyan police have arrested five boys as authorities probe the alleged rape of as many as 10 schoolgirls this week in central Kenya, officials said on Thursday. Central Province police commander Tom Mutisya Ngesa said the suspects were arrested on Wednesday after being identified by several victims who were allegedly assaulted during an overnight protest against school management. "We arrested five boys who were named by three girls to be the alleged rapists," Mutisya told AFP by phone from the regional capital of Nyeri. "We are still carrying out further investigations into this horrific incident." "We are going to take them to court after we carry out forensics to determine who raped who," he said, adding that the detainees were all teenage high school students. Police said the girls were raped late Sunday when about 700 students of Kangubiri High School in Nyeri, about 100km north of the capital, protested outside the school against the school administration.

A rape investigation is underway at a school in Northwest Indiana. The family of a 16-year-old student says the girl was raped and is now pregnant. CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports the girl is a special education student and doesn't realize what's happening. The Gary special education student still loves to do her schoolwork, but she's terrified to return to school. The Lew Wallace High School junior said she was sexually assaulted in the school's gym by a classmate on April 5. "She was supposed to sit there and not leave, but with the capacity of a five-year-old, I'm gonna get up and move around. And the boy becked and called her, and he did what he did," a family member of the student said. According to the police report, some students witnessed the attack and ran to get a teacher. The victim was then taken to a hospital by her grandmother. The victim's aunt said a month later, the family learned the alleged rape had resulted in a pregnancy. The family is heartbroken.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with raping a mentally disabled 13-year-old girl at Rutland Middle School, authorities said Wednesday. The incident happened May 3 about 2 p.m. when the two were alone in a school office, Bibb County sheriff's Capt. Mike Smallwood said. He said the suspect's parents say he is also mentally disabled. "She'd gone in there to get her cell phone," he said. "They happened to be there at the same time." The suspect is accused of pulling down her underpants and assaulting her, he said. The incident lasted less than a minute, Smallwood said. The victim told her grandmother about the incident that day and investigators met them both at a hospital, Smallwood said. The boy was charged that night, he said. Mike Van Wyck, the school system's assistant superintendent of student support services, said the boy has been disciplined and the overall sequence of events leading up to the incident is under investigation. He would not reveal how the boy was disciplined.

A SEX monster who raped a 10-year-old girl while she played in the woods in north east London has been jailed for life. Laurence Malcolm Barwick, 49, was sentenced today - almost 15 years to the day after he attacked the young girl and her friend. New DNA evidence helped the Met's Cold Case unit catch the rapist. On May 29, 1991, the two 10-year-old girls went out to play during school half-term. The pair walked to a den they had made in a holly tree in the woods at Forest Glade, Leytonstone, just a short walk from their home. As the best friends were about to return home Barwick appeared at the den's entrance. Barwick, then 33, made lewd comments to the girls and told them to sit down and undress. He then raped one of the girls and acted indecently to the other.

Generations of children have played the game of tag on playgrounds, but one middle school student got in trouble with police for playing a variation of the game. Police in Golden arrested Cole Sharpe, 14, from Bell Middle School after a girl accused him of touching her breasts during a game called "boob tag." "It's just like tag except you, like, poke the breast area," Sharpe told reporters. The teenager was later released while police investigate him on a possible charge of unlawful sexual contact. "I have no tolerance for sex offenses but I don't feel that this is one of them," said Lynn Sharpe, Cole's mother. "I'm fearful that this is going to reflect on him and maybe tag him for the rest of his life." Officials for Jefferson County Schools said they heard about the game and conducted their own investigation."Students were interviewed, the information was passed on to Bell Middle School's resource officer who filed a routine report," said Casey Mahon with the district office. She said something in the report apparently triggered the interest of police. "If this goes to court, then I'm just going to explain that I didn't do anything like this," Sharpe said. Sharpe admitted to playing the game with his friends, but said he didn't play "boob tag" with the girl who made the accusations.

Northwestern University suspended its women's soccer team today pending an investigation of alleged hazing involving players last year. A statement from Northwestern's athletic director says the school learned of the alleged incident today. The school policy prohibits hazing.Athletic Director Mark Murphy says if the investigation shows that a violation of Northwestern's polices occurred, sanctions will be imposed.A Web site posted pictures today that it claims are of the soccer players -- some with blindfolds over their eyes and hands tied behind their backs.The university would not provide any other details and declined to talk about the Web site. The team, whose season begins in the fall, finished with a nine-nine-one record last season.

A seven-year-old girl studying in Shivam School in Kameshwar Sankul in the posh Satellite area of the city was raped inside the toilet by the school’s sweeper on Monday morning. The culprit, Pravin Makwana (22), was arrested within hours of the incident. The girl, a class III student, went to the toilet after writing her exam around 11 am when the accused followed her. He locked the door from inside, raped the girl and fled latching the door from outside. Nobody in the school found anything amiss till residents of the neighbouring bungalow, that shares a wall with the school, raised an alarm after hearing the panic cries of the girl. A teacher then found the girl in the toilet. On investigation, the police found that Makwana, who had reported on duty in the morning, had left without informing the authorities. "The victim said the accused was wearing a red shirt," said AK Jadeja, deputy commissioner of police. The police found Makwana in his home, rounded off all the staff and paraded them before the girl who is admitted in the VS hospital.

Teachers at the Vauxhall High School in East Kingston, boycotted classes yesterday, to protest against the rape of a female student and other security concerns. For years, staff and students at the institution have been affected by violence. One of the vice-principals at the school told The Gleaner yesterday that the teachers are frustrated because members of the community are constantly invading the school compound and harassing the students. The vice-principal explained that teachers and students are oftentimes distracted by men looking through the windows when classes in session. "The teachers feel intimidated and they feel that they cannot continue to teach in this kind of environment," the vice-principal said. He noted that a perimeter fence, which was damaged during Hurricane Ivan in 2004, is the source of the problem. The vice-principal who is in charge of the afternoon shift said work had started on the fence last year but it did not get very far. The vice-principal told The Gleaner that students, especially the females, are fearful and oftentimes request to use the staff bathroom because they are afraid to go around to the back of the school where the bathrooms are located.

Two teachers have been arrested and seven others suspended after a girl was allegedly raped in a government-run school in India's Haryana state. The father of the teenage girl approached the authorities after discovering she was pregnant. The girl, who studied in the school in a village in the state's Jind district, alleged she had been raped by two of her teachers. The two teachers who have been accused have denied the allegation. The Jind district commissioner, MP Bansal, told the BBC charges of rape had been filed against the two teachers. "We took action after getting a written complaint from the girl's father," he said. He said the school authorities had decided to suspend seven others for apparently failing to report the rape or prevent it from taking place.

British girls are among the most violent in the world, according to new research. England and Scotland came fifth and sixth in a league table showing fighting among 11 to 15-year-old schoolgirls in 35 developed countries. In both countries, almost a third had been involved in at least one physical fight in the previous year. Concerns have been raised that Britain's "ladette" culture is fuelling such problems. Dr Candace Currie, the director of the child and adolescent health research unit at Edinburgh University and co-author of the report, said the high level of fighting among girls in the UK worried her. The average rate of girls' violence across all the countries was just 23 per cent, while worst-scoring Hungary was not far ahead of the English and Scottish on 32.1 per cent. After that came Estonia, Lithuania and Belgium. Wales fared slightly better in 12th place and a score of 24.6 per cent, while Finland did best with 13.3 per cent. The study, which quizzed 161,082 pupils, found that while boys were more violent overall, British schoolboys were further down the table than their female counterparts. Scottish boys fared worst, earning 10th place with a rate of 60.2 per cent, while those south of the border were not far behind in 13th, and a score of 59.2 per cent. Welsh youngsters only came 26th, with 53.3 per cent of boys having been in a fight. The researchers reported that girls were most likely to fight with friends and family members, while boys were much more likely to engage in violence with total strangers. They said fighting among youngsters could be an sign that they would go on to be more violent, and called for a reduction in violent imagery in the media. More research was also needed to address the growing problem, they added.

A GANG of teenage boys raped an 11-year-old girl and filmed the attack in the latest in a number of serious incidents involving video capture on mobile phone. The video of the assault was circulated to pupils at the victim’s school and had been seen by hundreds of children by the next day, according to reports. Scotland Yard confirmed last night that detectives were investigating an allegation of rape against a girl, 11, and that three 14-year-old boys had been arrested in connection with the incident. The girl, a pupil at a North London school, was attacked at an address in Stoke Newington after classes on April 25. She told detectives that the boys, who are all classmates, demanded group sex with her. When she refused, she was raped by two of them while another secretly filmed the assault on a mobile phone. The footage was sent to other pupils within minutes. When teachers found out the following day, they reported the incident to the police. The girl was interviewed by detectives from Operation Sapphire, Scotland Yard’s sexual offences task force.

Almost 2,000 people braved frigid weather early Saturday but didn't get cold feet when they all went naked in the center of gothic Bruges in an art "happening" organized by photographer Spencer Tunick. With temperatures closing in on freezing, winds lashing the turrets of the city and rain putting a shine on the ancient cobblestones, 1,950 people shed their clothes at dawn, with many posing in a street close to the medieval Belfry or touring the canals on boats. "It was a good feeling, everybody went naked and there was this sense of togetherness. There was no shame," said Charlotte Logghe, 28. "It was extremely cold though. We were wet through and through," she added. In the warmer environment of the city's theater, hundreds of naked spectators had the cameras turned on them. U.S. photographer Tunick has been doing such nude assemblages around the world since 1992. The artist chose Bruges to open the Corpus 05 festival, which runs through September.
