Names For Vaginas

I have kind of a problem referring to my vagina and vulva, because I have yet to find a name for them that satisfies me. I don't like the words vagina, or vulva or labia, and I'm a little unclear as to what to call the collection of all these anatomical parts; the whole internal-external unit. I guess genitals, but I don't like that word either. A thoughtful somebody emailed me "vagina-tachi," where tachi is apparently a Japanese word translating to "group" or "and company." The vaginal crew. There are other words that refer to the complete system (cunt and yoni come to mind), but I have yet to bond with any particular name. They usually either strike me as too vulgar or, more often, too airy-fairy/enchanted garden-y (flower and orchid come to mind). Most often, I refer to the whole entity as my unit, which you have probably noticed in reading through the site. This term is not unique to my genitals, but since making this site and being forced to refer to them much more frequently and bluntly than ever before, 'unit' has become a necessary and specific name, at least around the house.

About My Virginity

When referring to virginity, I mostly use the word itself, but sometimes substitute derivatives of "purity" as a joke. In high school, my friends and I mostly used references to The Big V Club, with people being "in the club" or "out of the club." We also had a Big C Club for (mostly reluctantly) celibate people. These were just descriptive terms, we didn't have club activities or enforce membership or anything. We did have unofficial hand signs (V or C shaped fingers). Lately I also use derivatives of the word "nun"—nunnish, nunnery, etc. These sort of refer to this tiny bed I used to call my nun bed, and also to my roommate's two spayed nun-cats. I never really use the word "cherry" when referring to a virgin or to virginity, but my dad does (why do I know that?) and it comes up a lot in suggestive jokes on sitcoms and music videos.

My Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness seems right up there with vaginal odor on the list of things people say in feminine advertisements. My vagina does not get dry very often, but when it does get dry it is uncomfortable. The most common thing to induce dryness in my vagina is wearing tampons for several days in a row. They will absorb all my regular vaginal lubrication along with menstrual blood. I have never bought an anti-dryness product or applied one, but I have made efforts to enhance my natural lubrication by masturbating. Multiple washings in a day, including baths, showers, swimming, etc. can also contribute to dryness in my vagina by washing all my secretions away. Water does not make my vagina moist, it dries it out.

Police and justice officials are investigating a claim by a 14-year-old girl that she was repeatedly raped over several years by 11 male students, aged 13 and 15, at the school for the deaf they all attended in Zoetermeer. Some of the alleged incidents involved a single attacker, but several of the boys took part in others, she has told investigators. Justice officials are going to prosecute three of the suspects, but the fate of the other eight has not yet been revealed, newspaper De Telegraaf reported on Friday. All 11 boys were expelled from Effatha school after the alleged victim told two staff members that the boys had forced her into sexual activity, the management board of the Effatha group of schools confirmed on Friday. The girl alleges that the incidents took place within school hours once the teacher had left the classroom. "The unethical behaviour apparently took place in short periods in hall ways, toilets, outside the school building just as there was no direct physical supervision. Sometimes five to 10 minutes was apparently enough," the board said. The alleged victim has been placed with a foster family in North Holland province, and is receiving therapy and education. Three of the suspects had been living in the school, but have now returned to their family homes. All 11 boys are getting home schooling.

The nymphomaniac of legend was probably best defined by sex research pioneer Alfred Kinsey: "someone who has more sex than you do." Although wacky theories about female sexuality have circulated since ancient times, as a medical diagnosis nymphomania is only a couple centuries old. According to Carol Groneman, author of Nymphomania: A History (2000), the concept of nymphomania was first laid out by the French physician Bienville in his 1771 treatise, Nymphomania, or a Dissertation Concerning the Furor Uterinus. Among the behaviors Bienvillle cited as conducive to or symptomatic of nymphomania: dwelling on impure thoughts, reading novels, and eating too much chocolate. Oh, and indulging in "secret pollutions" (masturbation). Scientific thought on the subject didn't advance much for the next 175 years. Victorian medical literature is peppered with anecdotes about female patients exhibiting what we would regard as simple horniness but which back then could be a ticket to the insane asylum, especially if accompanied by physical symptoms like an "overheated" vagina or an enlarged clitoris or uterus. Treatments ranged from the comical to the downright criminal: cold baths and enemas, leeches applied to the perineum (the area between the vagina and rectum), and clitoridectomy (surgical removal of the clitoris).

A 14-year-old girl was raped by two 14-year-old boys at their school yesterday, the police said. The attack occurred at Intermediate School 302, at 350 Linwood Street, in Highland Park, inside a first floor bathroom, the police said. No weapon was used, said Officer Louis Camacho. Groneman guides the reader through the history of nymphomania as a medical illness, mental disorder, legal construct, cultural perception and off-color joke. In chronicling the transformation of the term, the author begins with the medical model of the 1800s, when strong sexual desire in a woman was considered a disease stemming from lack of morals and willpower. Groneman's analysis continues to the present day as she describes how new attitudes are colliding with persistent stereotypes surrounding female sexuality. "Nymphomania is a metaphor which embodies the fantasies and fears, anxieties and dangers connected to female sexuality," she writes. "By tracing its many meanings over two hundred years, we see how clearly it is reflected in the eye of the beholder."

But being human does have its advantages. We do in fact have a great big brain that allows something the other animals don't have-flexibility. When life becomes more complicated, we adjust because we can. The bedlam of hormonal mismatches isn't all that mismatched after all. We do get along fairly well, even trying to cram two lives into one.
