Family Says 16-Year-Old Girl Now Pregnant
(CBS) GARY, Ind. A rape investigation is underway at a school in Northwest Indiana.
The family of a 16-year-old student says the girl was raped and is now pregnant.
CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports the girl is a special education student and doesn't realize what's happening.
The Gary special education student still loves to do her schoolwork, but she's terrified to return to school. The Lew Wallace High School junior said she was sexually assaulted in the school's gym by a classmate on April 5.
"She was supposed to sit there and not leave, but with the capacity of a five-year-old, I'm gonna get up and move around. And the boy becked and called her, and he did what he did," a family member of the student said.
According to the police report, some students witnessed the attack and ran to get a teacher. The victim was then taken to a hospital by her grandmother. The victim's aunt said a month later, the family learned the alleged rape had resulted in a pregnancy. The family is heartbroken.
"She's handicapped her herself and she's not able to take care. And why have her carry a child nine months that she wouldn't be able to keep?" the relative said.
The family turned to the school board for help, but when they got nowhere, they contacted an attorney.
"They were given no assistance at all. The only advice they gave her is that they were going to take her out of the school and move her to another school and that's the only assistance that they offered," said attorney Jerry Peteet.
The Gary Community School Corporation says it is finalizing its investigation. The family attorney says he hopes to meet with them next week to discuss the matter, but if a satisfactory resolution isn't reached, the family says it will sue.
