13-year-old girl raped at Bibb school

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with raping a mentally disabled 13-year-old girl at Rutland Middle School, authorities said Wednesday.

The incident happened May 3 about 2 p.m. when the two were alone in a school office, Bibb County sheriff's Capt. Mike Smallwood said. He said the suspect's parents say he is also mentally disabled.

"She'd gone in there to get her cell phone," he said. "They happened to be there at the same time."

The suspect is accused of pulling down her underpants and assaulting her, he said.

The incident lasted less than a minute, Smallwood said.

The victim told her grandmother about the incident that day and investigators met them both at a hospital, Smallwood said. The boy was charged that night, he said.

Mike Van Wyck, the school system's assistant superintendent of student support services, said the boy has been disciplined and the overall sequence of events leading up to the incident is under investigation.

He would not reveal how the boy was disciplined.

He said the alleged incident took place in an office off a school computer lab.
